I created this "Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys," theme window for my friend Mary Kathryn's store, Clash, in Dayton. The store carries "offbeat" clothing and art items, hence highlighting those items as the "misfit toys" of the island.

After completing the carving of the tiki mug, we decided to make it a four-part mold. I then checked the carving for undercuts because the mold has to release smoothly off of the clay surface. Then using a level work surface make sure your sculpture is level. So after you slip cast your mugs they're not crooked. ...so just imagine all that while looking at this picture of the finished carving. (That hat on his head is called a spare. It sets in from the rim so your mug has a drinking edge. When the mold is made this stays an open hole to pour your casting slip into the mold, and pour it back out after is sets.)

Now the fun part. Prepare to have a day sucked out of your life as you build the mold.

There are different ways you can build it, this is what we did. (By we I mean I suckered my husband into this mess.) We have some boards with "edges" screwed into them so we can clamp them at any size "mold box" we need. (also, make sure they're square. Even though we do this its still a crapshoot sometimes.)

Then figure out how thick we want the plaster mold. We are making the mold 3.5" thick from the center of the carving. So that is about 1.75" to 2" of plaster deep. Mark the inside of the box you've formed and begin to fill it with clay or I use a mixture of foam packing, cardboard, foam core and clay. (I've used wood scraps too.)

After I get it as high as I need "cradling" the carving. I pack clay in all around being sure to make it seamless against the carving. I packed clay on each side and bottom making it smooth up to the carving. Then I built the center wall so we could pour the first quarter of the mold. This is where you need to get all the seams water (plaster) tight or it will drip and run out. Run a bead of clay against the wood, (2nd picture) the clay even up the walls of the mold box where they intersect. Think: "this has to float" it MUST be water tight!

Next spray some mold release on your carving and in the box. Cover EVERYTHING that the plaster will touch. (You can't see it, but its covered in butter cooking spray.) Using a measuring bucket estimate how much mass you have to fill and mix the plaster accordingly. (2 parts plaster to 1 part water. Its also better to mix a little more than you need than be too short! FYI) Mix is slowly to avoid air bubbles, make it lump free and well mixed. Then pour it in the mold slowly letting in cover evenly and smoothly. Some people brush it on, but we didn't need to ...we think.

After the plaster heats and hardens it will cool a bit. then you remove the clay or filler to the next section of the mold to be filled with plaster. Spray with mold release, mix and pour your plaster. Do this part four glorious times and you have a mold.

When I make a tiki mug I start with a sketch of what I want to do. (The hardest part of the process!)

The sketch then gets transformed to an actual size sketch, taking shrinkage into consideration.

I throw a cylinder, not pictured, on the wheel leaving it solid, in the size I need, sans design. (The design adds .125 to .24 more width to the mug sculpture.)

The actual size sketch is then laid over a slab of clay that was previously rolled out to fit the design. Then I cut the pieces out of the slab to then applique to the cylinder scoring it and using slip to attach.

I cheated and just rolled the heavy cylinder over the design (carefully) to attach it. (It came out better than expected. Usually I just pick up the pieces and attach them one by one.)

Sheet of matchbook covers I'm producing for the tiki show, March 2013, at Clash Consignments here in Dayton. (the FRAGILE stickers where to use up the extra space on the sticker sheet. I can use those for shipping!)

I thought matchbooks are a cool throw back to the original "Tiki movement" when people smoked like in the Mad Men show. (Speaking of Mad Men, there are a few scenes where the characters are sipping cocktails in tiki mugs!) I figure, I burn a lot of candles...and I'm sure people still smoke. They'd be a nifty little keepsake, trinket-y doodad! :)

I was going to have the matchbooks printed and buy them in bulk. (which would have been cheaper)
But I really didn't think I needed a thousand for 140 bucks...so I bought 200 plain white one on Amazon.com for less than 20 bucks. I'll print a sticker sheet off my laser printer and attach it to the outside of the matchbook. That way I can have many different styles.Liz Dearthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11914117333763946185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7741873300082095008.post-29316014083850771842013-01-13T10:17:00.000-08:002013-01-13T10:17:32.434-08:00

A ghost I had made for Halloween at work.
A little dirty drapery material, paper mache and spray paint.

Ah the good ole days when I'd come in early and decorate for a Halloween party. Until we hired some folks who kinda hate Halloween, and bitch at me for decorating. Maybe this year, with some new hires, we'll out number the grouch bags and get back to having some fun! :)

Why do this for work you ask?
(...I'm sure you asked...)
It's a sad tale of being an only kid on my side of the busy street, where there were never Trick or Treaters! (Then compound that by not easily making friends cause...I'm shy damn it!) And the house I now live in is in the middle of nowhere. (Which is great 364 days of the year! Except on Beggars night!) And our yard has a virtual "wall-o-shrubs" so no one would see anything I put up!

Hence, my employer putting up with my fanatical need to decorate for Halloween. He was kinda "mad" (or you could say, pissed off...) that one year I forgot an left the cobwebs up in the conference room, and it was time for the Monday morning meeting. Other than that, he seems to generally dig it. And, I get along well with a few co-workers who dig Halloween, so that makes it worth sticking it in the eye of those who are bitchy about the holiday!
Well, it feels like it anyway.
Can't wait! Then I wish it would linger...

Anyway, I may have mentioned to some folks, I will not be at street fair in the fall.
I wish I could, but having a day job there is only so much I can create. :)
And I'm testing a new stomping ground... Horror Hound Indianapolis Sept 7-9.
I was 3-4 blocks away ...shriveling from dehydration...in search of a tiki oasisis. :) And the sad part was I even told the dudes running the event I was going to set up at the end of 5th street, and no one made any attempt to say, um, that's like, not where it's gonna be. So, thanks! :) (I'm really just teasing...but it was kinda weird...)
Liz Dearthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11914117333763946185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7741873300082095008.post-73880154072142575282012-06-11T09:46:00.003-07:002012-06-11T09:46:55.003-07:00Call of the TropicsI'll be hauling some freaky pottery stuff to "Call of the Tropics" festival in Dayton's Oregon District July 6th, 5-10pm.

I understand it is a cruise in for Hot Rods and some surfer rock & rockabilly will be happening...
It's all to kick off an art show at the Color of Eneregy Galley showcasing tiki art!

I'll be the low brow artist on the street Friday night! :)
I'll be on the main drag (5th street) in front of Loretta Puncer's, Gallery 510, fine art from 5-10.
She asked me to set up a small booth in honor of the event.

So if you need a tiki mug, shot glass, or tiki torch for your own backyard oasis...it is my job to freak out your neighbors. I'll do my best!
I've not listed these on Etsy yet. And I'm not too sure about Etsy and shipping pottery items. I packed an item today and shipped it at the local UPS store. I told the guy waiting on me this is fragile (and it had fragile stamped on the box) I had double packed it, which is good cause he dropped it before I left the room and then he threw it on top of a pile of other boxes.

(I stare like a deer at the guy - blink - and then more staring)
But what am I suppose to do?!?! So, I hope that will not have to be refunded. Geez!

Please make it there little pottery piece and become a Christmas miracle!
